During 2016, we undertook the project of carrying out the virtual reconstruction of the San Chuis hillfort. To carry out this work, we used the Blender application as a 3D modeling tool. Blender is a free software, which presents great versatility and wide plasticity and which, among other facilities, allows applying textures of original images from the restored structures. Now, in the year 2024, we have carried out an improvement of the model according to the new possibilities that 3D modeling applications offer us today, greatly improved compared to that time. We have continued working with Blender, but now with an updated version that is very different from the first one we used. This new version allows for greater realism to the model, not only due to the application of textures, but also due to the rendering system itself, render Cycles, which is much better than before. We do not want to go into further technical details, any questions regarding this software can be made on the organization’s own website, Blender.org.

Another novelty that we have added to that first version of the 3D model is that we have reconstructed the line of the rampart and some huts according to the information provided to us by the georadar study. We have textured this part of the rampart and the huts differently so that there is no confusion with the area that really corresponds to the excavated remains.

Prior to the beginning of the reconstruction work, we have proposed a guiding working hypothesis in order to achieve the greatest possible accuracy, always taking into account that it is a deduction from the urban planning studies that have been carried out on the hillfort and the data we have so far.

Thus, when designing the structures, we have always started from the AutoCAD floor plan, with the original and exact measurements. From there we have been raising the walls. We have given the indigenous structures an average height of 1.40 m. This is because not many remains of collapsed walls were found next to them when they were excavated, so it was thought that at no time should they have exceeded that height. However, the roofs do have a higher level that would give the house the necessary height. This can still be observed in some areas where this type of huts are preserved, such as the Ancares area, which has served as inspiration for us. In the circular rooms, those in which we have found remains of their existence, we have placed a central post, as is the case of Structure 3. If it does not exist, we have simply put a conical roof made with wooden structures as is traditional in these cases. If the house is small and the roof is not going to have much weight, sometimes the central post is not needed for support. In the case of Structure 9, which is very particular, we have carried out a study of what its roof could have been like and proposed a reconstruction hypothesis: there are no traces of central posts being used, so the beam system must have been more sophisticated and stronger, with a larger rib system. It must be taken into account that it is a very wide roofing.

As far as the Roman area is concerned, the walls were taller and the roof, although it would be vegetal, would have a different structure. We believe that the roof was vegetal because when we have studied the spatial distribution of the materials, we have not found a number of remains of tegula or slate tiles that could allow us to think of the presence of a general roofing made of tiles of one class or another. There are some small areas where a few slate tiles appeared but the truth is that they are not enough to cover a fairly extensive surface. However, we have found remains of iron nails along the walls which leads us to think of wooden roofs with the nails reinforcing or helping to build the frame of wood beams. Probably the nails would be used to fix slate tiles on the edges of the roofing as reinforcement since it is one of the weakest points of the wooden framework. We have only found a stucco rest in the area of the interior of the house attached to the wall: it makes us suppose that perhaps it would be plastered, at least that area.

We have applied stone textures taken from the original images of the hillfort walls to the walls of each house to try to give it a more realistic appearance. We have restored the floor inside each house with a texture of tamped soil, which we thought was the most appropriate. As for the roofs, we have applied a straw texture taken from images of real restorations of houses of this type.

Inside the houses we have placed the fireplaces in case they existed and the original pavements, as in Structure 12.

To make the scenes inside the houses more realistic, we have added some furniture. It is clear that, although we have always tried to add objects from that period and of which we have found remains, there are some such as wooden furniture that, although based on real models from each period, are the product of our imagination. We have added Roman furniture in the Roman period, and, for the Iron Age, we have not added anything more than a wooden bench that we consider possible to have existed. We have been very careful with the Iron Age because we did not want to decontextualize the model historically. In this sense, the ceramics and hand mills that appear are modelled according to the remains existing in the site. As I have already pointed out, the only exception would be the small wooden bench in structure 9, a small esparto basket and a mat, these three based on objects found in similar historical contexts. The Roman Period in this sense is well known, so we have not really added anything that has not been historically verified. As with the previous period, the ceramic typologies, including the Terras Sigillatas, are more than contrasted. In any case, all the interior scenes from the Roman period are a free recreation.

In order to mould the surface where the hillfort is settled we have used the AutoCAD planes with the level curves with the purpose of developing not only the plan but also the slope profiles. First we exported the AutoCAD plane to Blender where we were building the 3D mesh of the terrain following the lines of the level curves and lifting them up in height every 2.5 m. Then we smoothed the mesh and added texture to it. Part of the texture was made from zenith images taken from Google Earth.

As we have already mentioned, both the Upper and Lower Quarter were in use in times before the rampart of modules, as evidenced by radiocarbon dating. Structure 18 goes through different construction phases beginning as a dwelling built on perishable materials during the First Iron Age. In addition, the remains of a primitive continuous rampart that were found to the north of the rampart of modules makes possible to think of the existence very early of a village surrounded by a rampart of this type. However, the data we have are so scarce that it seemed impossible to us to undertake the reconstruction of the hillfort at this time. Therefore, the first reconstruction of the hillfort that we will see belongs to the Second Iron Age, when its petrification takes place. However, during this phase a true urban evolution is also promoted reflecting the change of mentality that is occurring and which is manifested in the growing tension between the traditional communal identity, or village identity, and family identity. This will lead to the privatization of previously semi-public spaces, which in the case of Structure 9 entails a complete closure of the existing space between structures becoming one. This evolution of which we have enough data is what will be shown in this first restitution of the hillfort.

As for Structure 12 we have rebuilt the fireplace and pavement, in addition to the bench. We see that in this case this structure is circular without the later rectangular addition of Roman times. The industrial area has been solved by lifting a windbreaker wall following the line of the remains found.

For the rampart we have differentiated two parts: an inner filling part and an exterior one that is the stone covering. We have given them a general height of three meters. We have restored a system of simple doors, although we really do not know how it was. But nevertheless, we believe that the front structures were ways to make difficult the arrival to the hillfort door in the case of an attack in this zone.
We have united with a wall the tower to the Upper Quarter rampart and located a main door in wood at the village entrance.

On the other hand, in the place where Structure 6 was, we have placed a round hut following the remains that were found under the quadrangular one of Roman time. We have rebuilt the one that was destroyed.

During the Roman era, the structures of the Upper Quarter are the ones that went through a major modification, although this occurred as well in the Lower Quarter.

Structure 6 was built with a new shape and for that the necessary Indigenous structures were demolished, specifically Structure 11. The windbreak of the industrial zone also disappeared. The same thing happened in the Upper Quarter, but on a much larger scale. To build Structure 15, as far as we know, Structure 14 is demolished, but given the large space occupied by the new Roman residence, more could have been destroyed.

Structure 18 was refurbished in this phase receiving a new quadrangular shape. On the other hand, part of the terrain and surrounding corridors of Structure 15 were paved, which we have reflected in the restitution that we will see later. As far as the wall is concerned, we have not placed the door and the annexed structures that were disabled to facilitate the access of the Roman contingent.

<p class="has-tiny-font-size
